The muse behind Busacca
My grandmother who ignited my love of fashion from the very beginning. Plus! A vintage shopping edit inspired by her impeccable wardrobe..
I can still hear the sound of her silver bangles jingling as she walked up the driveway and into my childhood home. “Hiiiii Meggie!!” coming from a big smile on her face and the perfect deep rouge lipstick on her lips. The lipstick always quickly ended up on all of our cheeks after her giving us a big Grandmother smooch. She would typically arrive with a gift in tow; good & plenty’s, a bottle of wine, or a perfectly wrapped horizontal white box with a colorful bow if it was an extra special occasion. The kind of present tightly and expertly wrapped where you absolutely need a pair of scissors. A minute detail that has always stuck with me because I would want so badly to open it right away with my bare hands because the box was often filled with a clothing item — my favorite.
She was always stunning. She is stunning. And not just in her striking looks, but in how she would enter any room. Intimidating, some would say, I think, and also inspiring. She carried herself proudly; impeccably dressed, thoughtfully put together from head to toe. You don’t have to speak to her to know she is strong, independent and intelligent. She moves and people’s eyes follow. It’s a trait my father inherited as well. I adored her from a very young age, and I still do. I often reflect and say to myself “how is she so with it?!” Even at her young age of 90.
My muse, Beverly June Covlin Busacca, is 90 today!!
Born June 25, 1935 — what a privilege. A privilege to experience so many chapters of life; moments marked as a girl, a daughter, sister, woman, wife, Mother, Matriarch, mother-in-law, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, model, business owner and friend. A true blessing.
I am still eagerly prying at her for more stories, for secret family recipes, more photographs and tidbits, for her closet (fingers crossed)!! I’ve always been inquisitive and curious, having this inherent desire to connect the familial dots. One’s family history is so special and I suppose that is the old soul in me. I feel fortunate to have had her share a lot of stunning imagery with me in recent years; special pictures that capture her big, beautiful life and now I am sharing a little background with you.
Why? Because I am proud of her. Because she is a huge part of my love for design, style, curation. One of the main sources of inspiration for my brand, our family heritage, the spirit of Busacca. It’s in the blood.
